EU Officials Propose Tighter Auto Emission Laws

Despite last minute efforts by German Chancellor Angela Merkel to shield German car makers from stricter rules, European Union lawmakers proposed tightening the automotive emissions laws here this week, reports The New York Times. If passed, the measure would be the first legally binding carbon emissions standard in Europe.

Critics voiced concerned that the costs for automakers to meet them would be overwhelming. "This is bad news for Europe, especially with the overall economic circumstances deteriorating already," said Ivan Hodac, the secretary general of the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association, which represents carmakers like BMW, Renault and Volvo. "The European car industry calls on legislators to refrain from threatening the future of car production in Europe." The European Parliament will vote on the measure this Fall.
